EVIS SAMMOUTIS (CY/UK)

Evis Sammoutis is a composer who is acutely interested in timbral matters. His music is characterised by a sophisticated control of musical gestures, a precise representation of musical intentions, and a unity between the main formal elements (gesture, figure and texture). He very often incorporates elements from the traditional music of his homeland (microtones, drones and specific modes in particular) fusing these organically with more traditional western features. By developing appropriate models of musical and intellectual expression Evis Sammoutis’ works give new meaning to musical objects not by abolishing traditional techniques, but on the contrary by building on their traditional representations and integrating these into a new synthesis.

EVIS SAMMOUTIS, composer and guitarist was born in Cyprus in 1979 where he had his first musical lessons, at the age of six, obtaining both the LRSM Diploma and the Performance and Teaching Diploma with distinction before moving to England in 1998 to continue his studies with Thomas Simaku (composition and orchestration) and Gilbert Biberian (guitar performance).
Since then he has also studied in masterclasses and workshops with Helmut Lachenmann, Beat Furrer, Toshio Hosokawa, Georges Aperghis, George Benjamin, Brian Ferneyhough, Augusta Read Thomas, Johannes Schollhorn and Fausto Romitelli at world renowned Festivals, Seminars and Workshops, including the Darmstadt International Summer Course for New Music, IRCAM’s One-Month Composition and Computer Music Programme, the Centre Acanthes, the Voix Nouvelles Composition Session at the Royaumont Foundation, the Tanglewood Festival, the Ictus International Composition Seminar and the Opera Writing Course in Aldeburgh.
His studies were supported by a number of scholarships and awards such as the PRS Foundation, O.R.S, and Sir Roy Marshall Scholarships, the Nonhebel, Vinson, Thomas Beecham and Bliss Trust Awards and the Hull University Departmental Prize. Upon graduation from the University of Hull with a first class degree (BMus) in all disciplines, he recently completed successfully his PhD studies in Musical Composition at the University of York. Evis Sammoutis was subsequently awarded a prestigious Wingate Foundation Scholarship (2005 – 2007) to pursue his compositional research more independently, whilst teaching Composition and Orchestration at Nottingham University (2005 – 2007) and guitar performance at York University (2002 – 2007). Evis has also taught composition at Hull University in 2006.
His works have been performed throughout Europe, America and the Far East, and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 (United Kingdom), Deutschlandradio, SWR2, Deutsche Welle and ARD (Germany), Rai 3 (Italy), 98.7WFMT (Chicago, U.S.A), RTP (Portugal), KBS1 (South Korea), the Dutch Radio, CyBC (Cyprus) and E.R.T (Greece). He was selected composer for the National New Composers’ Forum, the Spring Festival, the Huddersfield Young Composers workshop, the Ensemble Eleven Composer’s workshop and competition, the Athens Concert Hall Young Composer’s Workshop, the International Youth Music Forum in Kiev, Ukraine, the New Music North Festival in Canada and most recently he was awarded a three week residency at the Visby International Centre for Composers in Sweden. In the same year he was also shortlisted from SPNM (Society for the Promotion of New Music). He has served as the adjudicator of the Second Malaysian Guitar Competition, where he also gave masterclasses and a lecture and most recently he was a member of Jury at the XXI Certamen Internacional de Guitarra Clásica “Andrés Segovia” and the XVIII Concurso de Composición “Andrés Segovia” in Spain.
