COMPOSERS

TOMAS PALKA (CZ)

Motto:
The fate is such, that none within is solid without trembling..
The love is such, that you can't reach the world, though for a small step.
And silence is such, that you must pronounce it: you, and only you!
(Vladimír Holan)

Tomas Palka: Compositions by Tomas Palka draw inspiration from an extra-musical program, very often inspired by intellectual or sacred themes. They are projected in the area of musical tectonics (lower dynamics, work with space and time) and to the contents of compositions – use of spiritual texts (poems). Compositions are directed towards slight, introvert and contemplative levels. Pálka is interested in possibilities of unusual technique of playing instruments and confrontations with the contents of the programme. With music form, he inclines to solid (mono-thematic) forms and to the development of musical contrasts, bearing in mind the overall cohesion of music sections. The contrast is unwound through musical microelements.

Tomas Palka (1978) studied composition at Brno Conservatory with Prof. Pavel Zemek and at Academy of Performing Arts in Prague with Prof. Marek Kopelent (graduated 2005). He continues his studies in postgraduate degree with Prof. Slavický. He is a co-founder of Konvergence and also a member of its ensemble playing violin and piano. This association is one of a number of groups of young composers and musicians orientated to contemporary music, but whose concerts commendably strike a balance between known works and music written by ourselves. The effect has been to enrich the music scene with performance of works by relative unknowns at the beginning of their careers, and also by famous names whose music has, for one reason or another, almost never been played in the Czech Republic. More info about Konvergence is available on website: www.konvergence.org
Tomáš Pálka is engaged in pedagogical activity at the conservatory in Brno (music theory, electroacoustics music) and at the music school in Prague (composition and improvisation). Simultaneously he is also interested and active in music theater, multimedia projects or projects for radio broadcasting.
He is looking for connections between music and other arts. It is also challenge for projects called Musical connections which is musical-scenic performance (composed and improvised music – word – move – light, live and electroacoustic music…) established by him in collaboration with Prague Academy.
He received numerous prizes for compositions (Germany, Czech, Slovakia). His music is played in Europe (Germany, France, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary…), USA (Chicago) on festivals or concerts of contemporary art.
He became a participant of various courses for composers – Czech Republic, Great Britain, Austria with lectors like Nigel Osbourne, Lasse Thoressen, Philippe Manoury, Xiaoyong Chen, German Toro-Pérez…
