OSCAR CARMONA (CL)

Oscar Carmona was born in Santiago of Chile in 1975. He is a graduate (1997 – 2001) of the Facultad de Artes at the Universidad de Chile where he studied music composition with Aliocha Solovera.
In 1998 he received the first prize in the Vicente Huidobro Composition Competition and, in 2002 a special prize in the Composition Competition at the Universidad Católica de Chile. His music has been performed mainly in Chile, but also in Japan, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Slovenia, Cuba, Ukraine, Germany, the USA, Argentine, Brazil, Croatia, at festivals such as World Music Days, Gaudeamus Music Week, Two Days and Two Nights of New Music, Encounters, ArtCologne, and Festival Encuentros. In 2004 he was finalist in the Gaudeamus Music Competition in Amsterdam with his work “Cygnus X – 1”. His music has been performed by Les Percussions de Strasbourg, Irvine Arditti, Excelsior Quartet, Hinko Haas, Bojan Gorisek, Matthias Ziegler and Camilla Hoitenga among others. In 2006 he participated in the Encuentro de Compositores INJUVE, in Spain, where attend to master-classes with Martín Matalón, Kaija Saariaho and Mauricio Sotelo.
In February of this year he was selected to participate with a new orchestral work at the workshops of music composition in the CENTRE ACANTHES. The work will be studied by the musicians of the Orchestre National de Lorraine and conducted by Jacques Mercier. Currently, he teaches music composition, counterpoint, analysis, harmony and orchestration at the Facultad de Artes of the Universidad de Chile and at the Escuela de Música of the Universidad Arcis.
