SEBASTIEN BERANGER (FR)
As many young composers, Sébastien Béranger cannot be classified
easily. Even if the guiding principles are often the same, the techniques
used for generating material are very different from one piece to another.
This composer tries to define a compositional style, a sound – in the
broadest sense – though without developing any one fixed technique. Here,
the musical writing synthesizes different historical approach in a
personal way. He seeks to draw his different musical elements from the
three main musical currents that have appeared in France over recent
years: spectral music, a post-serialism characterized by highly specific
treatment of the musical material and the parameters, and lastly, a
post-modal approach that is less clearly defined as it includes both the
Donatoni of the 1980s and all Ligeti’s music. Then, he tries to bring them
face to face and, at the same time, merge them.
Sébastien Béranger develops symmetries between mathematics, graphics and
music, working on “space”, as the metaphorical representation of the
different musical scales: scales of pitches, of durations, of thicknesses
of sound. Acoustic spaces result from the association of different
parameters, and this gives a kind of multidimensional sound sculpture. In
the conceptualization of sound that passes through graphic or mathematical
representation, we can hear in Béranger’s works a very clear relationship
with spectral music, a pretty modal aspect and a formalization which is
not denied… The spaces we talked about allow the composer to develop not
only material but a space-plane, a grid that enables him to bring out the
linearity. The melodic aspect is consequently always very much present in
his music.
(EN) SEBASTIEN BERANGER is born in Reims (Rheims) in 1977. He
studied at the conservatories of Reims and Lille. Then, he enters the
composition class at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de
Danse de Paris (CNSMDP) with Emmanuel Nunes, Michaël Levinas, Yann Geslin,
Luis Naón and Michelle Réverdy where he gets prices of music analysis,
composition and composition with new technologies. At the same time, he
obtains a DEA in aesthetic and sciences of art at the university of Lille
III on “The spectrum and the acoustic reality productive of curved scales
in 20th century music” and a doctorate in musicology at the University of
Nice (UNSA) with a thesis on “The parametric spaces in the instrumental
music since 1950”.
The first laureate of the International Foundation Lili and Nadia
Boulanger for 2001-2002, he won the contest Opera Prima Europa in Rome in
2001. In 2003, he was a finalist of the contest Ton Bruynel 2003 (The
Nederland), of the II Concurso Internacional de Miniaturas
Electroacústicas (Spain) and won an honorific mention at MÚSICA VIVA 2003
4th Electro-acoustic Composition Competition (Portugal). He also took part
in the Forum de la Jeune Création Musicale of the International Society
for Contemporary Music (ISCM) and in the 3d International Forum for Young
Composers of the ensemble Aleph.
Sébastien Béranger’s music has been played by Christophe Desjardins,
Sophie Deshayes, by the ensembles 2e2m, Accroche Note, Alter Ego, Aleph,
Assonance, by the Ensemble Intercontemporain, by the saxophones quartet
Axone and has been scheduled in the festivals Musica, Nuits Bleues,
Nicephore Days and Gaudeamus Music Week.
